Snuff Out E-Cig Marketing to Kids

Electronic cigarettes are becoming increasingly popular around the United States. In light of the recent hype, citizens and legislators have concerns about the repercussions of vaping on the general public, especially the youth.

In Kittitas county, Washington some residents are ardently seeking a controversial county-wide ban on using electronic cigarettes in public. Citizens are debating whether this ordinance should actually go into effect as there are a few different points of view to consider. Some citizens believe passing such a ban would be denying human rights and they bring up that some things that are potentially dangerous are not altogether publicly outlawed.

Consuming alcohol and carrying lethal weapons could also be hazardous, but citizens are not forbidden to do so in most public places. Some feel that there has not been enough research on the effects of vaping and breathing in second-hand electronic cigarette vapors and that enforcing such a rule could be unnecessary and detrimental to those who are trying to stop smoking regular cigarettes, since regular cigarettes have been proven to be physically dangerous. On the other hand, electronic cigarettes have not be proven to be entirely safe either, and exposing easily-influenced children to the increasingly popular trend could be unfair to them.

The ban could also also allow an exception to the restriction if the usage of electronic cigarettes is inside of a legitimate vape shop. This ban if passed, would not permit the entry of anyone under eighteen to enter an electronic cigarette store and would require buyers to show identification prior to purchasing.

Also in Washington state, a recent poll shows that two-thirds of participants would favor a law that would raise the legal age of smoking and vaping from eighteen years old to twenty-one. Hawaii is the only state at this time to adopt this law that makes twenty-one the minimum legal age for smoking.

The concern over electronic cigarettes being used by kids could be well-founded. It is not uncommon for those who use e-cigarettes to still have a persistent cough the same way smokers of tobacco products do. Our pulmonary system is designed to inhale temperate air, not hot, dry vapors. Breathing in hot vapor can irritate your lungs and the lining of your bronchial tubes, It is also uncertain as to whether electronic cigarette usage may be a gateway to tobacco usage. We usually think of it occurring in an opposite manner, but with the electronic cigarette liquid companies promoting candy and fruit flavors, it is something to consider.
